AI SEO: show up in AI answers.

Ask ChatGPT for an accountant in Coburg and it names three. People look for an AI SEO agency to be one of them. I do that work. The same things that get you found on Google, plus clear answers on your own pages.

Answer the question on the page

Plain questions and answers, marked up so the machines can read them.

Say who you are

Name, place, what you do, the same everywhere.

Let them in

Your site allows the AI crawlers. Many sites block them by accident.

Give them something to quote

A profile post or a page that names the suburb, the service and the timeframe.

What changed

A year ago a person looking for an accountant in Coburg typed it into Google and scrolled. Today a lot of them ask Google or ChatGPT, and the answer comes back as a short list with a reason next to each name. Sometimes one name. They call that name. They never see the page of links you were trying to rank on.

The AI is reading plain, machine-clear facts about you, not clever marketing. So the moves that matter are website moves: code that spells out who you are, and pages written to answer the exact question.

From my post: How a Melbourne business shows up in Google AI answers.

What I fix first

Google says you need no special markup to appear in its AI answers. What the tools need is plain, readable facts about you. Most sites I check are missing the basics.

No schemaNo business details for machines

Scented Life had no business schema at all. Divine Mushrooms had no review markup. I added both in Foundations.

No pagesNothing to read

A Coburg medical centre I audited had no service pages, no suburb page and a slow site. There was nothing for the AI to read.

Every FAQMy own site first

On my site, every FAQ is marked up word for word from what you see, every page names who wrote it, and an llms.txt file lists every page and the key facts.

How I measure it

No tool tracks AI rankings reliably, and anyone who says otherwise is overclaiming. So I ask the same set of questions in ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google's AI answers on set dates, and write down who gets named. That baseline is part of Awareness. The fixes that help most are in Foundations: complete business details, review markup where you have reviews, and one name, address and phone everywhere.

Questions I get asked

Is this different from normal SEO?

The basics are the same and still count. The edge is in the AI-specific work: structured facts and question-shaped pages.

Can you guarantee the AI names us?

No. I can make you the clearest, best-described option in your suburb, and measure whether it names you on set dates. That baseline is part of Awareness.

Is this the same as generative engine optimisation?

Yes. Generative engine optimisation, AI search optimisation and answer engine optimisation are names for the same work: making your business easy for AI tools to describe and name.

Which AI tools does this cover?

ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google’s AI answers. They read the same kind of thing: clear facts about who you are, what you do and where.
